GOALKEEPER TRAINING
Below is an outline of topics covered in WVFC's weekly goalkeeper training. All WVFC's goalies are expected to be at one session per week and encouraged to participate in all. As always, WVFC Goalkeeper training is free of charge for WVFC members. Also, individual lessons are available upon request.
GOALKEEPER TRAINING TOPICS
HANDLING:
Goalkeepers need to have good hands and as well as the understanding of the different catching methods. Repetitions and decision making are key to this topic and is something WVFC work on every week.
FOOTWORK:
Footwork is vital to the success of goalkeepers for all ages. Agility, balance, strength and efficient steps are all part of footwork sessions for WVFC goalies.
CROSSES:
As young goalkeepers age, the style of soccer becomes much more difficult in terms of speed, size and strength. Crosses and wide play become much more a fabric of the game and goalkeepers need to be able to read crosses, collect crosses, increase crossing range and of course have the confidence and courage to come out and collect. WVFC goalies will be tested in a variety of different wide play scenarios resulting in crosses or corners.
DIVING:
Diving saves are the most visible applications of goalkeeping technique. Its important for all young goalies to learn the correct technique to not only to make saves, but for safety and preserving ones goalkeeping lifespan.
DISTRIBUTION:
Goalkeepers are the last line of defense, but they are the first line in the attack. Distributing the ball to ones teammates is paramount. Doing it accurately and efficiently is expected. Distributing the ball is as much technical as it is decision making. WVFC goalies will spend time learn how and why to distribute the ball.
BREAKAWAYS:
The most exciting play for a goalie is the 1v1 or a breakaway. Technique is crucial to avoid injury, but timing, reaction and courage all need to be developed for success in these situations. WVFC goalies will be challenged in a variety of ways to develop this part of their game.
